Black Resistance

1.      Black resistance and participation in women’s rights were synonymous with each other. The black community strived for social equality.  Women resisted by strikes such as the washerwomen’s strike in Atlanta in the summer of 1881. Many strikes in different towns arose after these women in Atlanta began; this was the start of women’s rights strikes and resistance. This was one of the ways that women used their political voice, they showed men that they could fight back and they did. Sojourner Truth traveled and delivered speeches on why she could be considered a women and why she should have rights. Maria Stewart also gave speeches to communities and delivered the message that black men and women should stand for their communities.
